How to Use Cheat Engine: A Complete Beginner’s Guide Cheat Engine is a powerful, open-source tool used to modify single-player games. It scans your computer’s memory to find and change values like health, ammunition, or currency. While it looks complex, the basic functions are easy to learn. This guide will walk you through your very first memory scan. Step 1: Download and Installation Go to the official Cheat Engine website. Download the latest installer for your operating system. Run the installer carefully.
Note: Decline any optional bundled software or third-party offers during setup. Step 2: Connect to Your Game
To modify a game, Cheat Engine must attach to its running process. Launch the game you want to modify.
Load your save file so your character is actively in the game world. Press Alt + Tab to switch to Cheat Engine.
Click the Monitor Icon (top-left corner). This opens the Process List.
Find your game’s name in the list, select it, and click Open. Step 3: Scan for a Value
Let’s assume you want to change your current gold count, which is currently at 500. Look at the Value field on the right side of Cheat Engine. Type 500 into the box.
Keep Scan Type as “Exact Value” and Value Type as “4 Bytes” (the standard for most game numbers). Click First Scan.
A list of hundreds or thousands of memory addresses will appear on the left. Step 4: Narrow Down the Results
You must filter the results to find the exact address controlling your gold. Return to your game.
Spend or earn some gold so the number changes. Let’s say your gold is now 450. Return to Cheat Engine. Type 450 into the Value field. Click Next Scan (do not click First Scan again).
Repeat this process until only 1 to 5 addresses remain in the left window. Step 5: Change the Value
Once you have isolated the correct address, you can modify it.
Double-click the remaining address in the left list. This moves it to the address table at the bottom.
Double-click the number under the Value column in the bottom table. Type your desired number (e.g., 99999) and press Enter.
Go back to your game. Perform an action that updates your UI, and you will see your new total. Safety and Ethics
Single-Player Only: Only use Cheat Engine on offline, single-player games.
Anti-Cheat Warning: Avoid opening Cheat Engine while online multiplayer games are running. Modern anti-cheat software will detect it and permanently ban your account.
